More Than a Present: Why We Give Gifts

Gift-giving tends to make us think of the obvious dates in the calendar: birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries and weddings. But some of the most meaningful gifts are bought for reasons that have very little to do with an occasion at all.

Sometimes we give because we want to celebrate someone. Sometimes it is a thank you. Sometimes someone has had a difficult week. And sometimes we simply see something and immediately think, they would love this.

Perhaps that is what makes gifting so personal. We rarely buy a gift because somebody simply needs another possession. We choose it because we want it to say something on our behalf.

The moments when we expect to give

There are occasions when giving becomes part of the ritual.

A birthday marks another year. A wedding celebrates a new beginning. A housewarming acknowledges a new home. An anniversary remembers something that began years before.

But while the occasion might give us the reason to shop, the relationship usually determines what we choose.

For one person, the perfect gift might be practical. For another, it is something beautiful they would probably never think to buy for themselves — a little indulgence, chosen purely to be enjoyed.

This is part of what makes home fragrance such a natural gift. Rather than simply giving another object, you are choosing something that can become part of the recipient's home and the atmosphere they create within it.

And then there are the gifts nobody expects

Some of the nicest gifts arrive without a date attached to them.

A friend has done something kind. Someone has reached a milestone that isn't traditionally celebrated. You are visiting their new home for the first time. You want to say thank you.

Or perhaps there is no particular reason at all.

These gifts can feel especially thoughtful because there was no obligation to give them. They exist simply because someone was on your mind.

A scented candle, for example, can be a small luxury for someone who enjoys quiet evenings, entertaining or creating atmosphere at home.

A reed diffuser can become part of a hallway, bedroom or living space, quietly fragrancing the room day after day.

Neither needs a major occasion attached to it.

Why do we give gifts?

At its simplest, giving is a form of communication.

A gift can say:

I know you.

I appreciate you.

I'm proud of you.

Welcome to your new home.

This reminded me of you.

And occasionally: you probably wouldn't buy this for yourself, so I did.

That last thought is part of the pleasure of gifting.

We often hesitate over buying ourselves the more beautiful version of something — the candle with the beautiful vessel, the fragrance we don't technically need, the object chosen simply because it would look lovely at home.

Yet when we are buying for somebody else, that little indulgence suddenly feels entirely justified.

Choosing something that feels personal

A thoughtful gift doesn't have to be unusual or complicated. Often, it simply means paying attention.

Think about the person you're buying for.

Do they love evenings at home? Are they always changing their interiors? Do they enjoy hosting? Have they recently moved? Do they prefer something they can enjoy occasionally, or something that becomes part of the room every day?

For someone who enjoys the ritual of lighting a fragrance and changing the mood of a room, a candle can be a beautiful choice.

For someone who prefers continuous fragrance without a flame, a diffuser may suit them better. If you're unsure which style would work for their home, our Journal looks more closely at how to choose a luxury reed diffuser.

And if you want the gift to feel more substantial, a candle and diffuser gift set gives them both: fragrance to enjoy in the moment and fragrance that remains in the room throughout the day.

Why fragrance can become more than a gift

Scent has an unusual relationship with memory.

A fragrance can become associated with a home, a season, an evening or a particular moment without us consciously deciding that it will.

A candle lit during dinners or quiet evenings becomes familiar. A diffuser placed in a new home slowly becomes part of how that space feels.

That is why choosing a fragrance as a gift can feel more personal than simply choosing another decorative object.

Our After Dark Black Amber & Lavender fragrance was created around this idea of atmosphere — rich interiors, low lighting and evenings at home. You can read the story behind Black Amber & Lavender if you want to discover more about the inspiration behind the scent.

Sometimes the reason matters more than the occasion

We tend to begin gift shopping by asking:

What should I buy?

Perhaps a better question is:

What do I want this gift to say?

A congratulatory gift can say I'm proud of you.

A housewarming gift can say enjoy your new home.

A thank-you gift says I appreciate what you did.

And an unexpected gift can simply say I was thinking about you.

Once you know why you're giving, choosing what to give often becomes much easier.

It doesn't have to be extravagant. It just has to feel considered.

Because ultimately, a good gift isn't only about the object inside the box.

It's about what you wanted to say when you chose it.
